Background: Ryne was shipwrecked just north of Steelhead and having no family to return to, settled in the city. Dr Beck was horrified at the squalour endured by the poor locals and even poorer migrant workers and sailors who called the waterfront slums of Shanghai their home. He rented what he could afford and, for the second time in his life, set up a clinic to care for the poor of the parish.
